Vice President Candidates: Brittany Jacobs and Stephen Pelna
Brittany Jacobs is a Safety Specialist with 4 years’ experience in both site and corporate management experience in the EHS Field. She is currently employed by United States Cold Storage as a Corporate Health and Safety Specialist, overseeing all company locations. Brittany was previously employed in the pharmaceutical industry, where she gained experience in manufacturing, industrial safety and ergonomics.
Brittany has demonstrated success in implementing initiatives and programs in reducing injuries, improving safety culture, ergonomic equipment design and layout, and introducing interactive safety technology.
Brittany graduated from Drexel University with a BS in Health Sciences and is currently completing her Master’s degree in business with a concentration in Emergency Management.
Stephen Pelna currently serves The Lewis Group as Vice President to oversee the Health & Safety and Emergency Services Departments. He holds a Master of Science Degree from St. Joseph’s University in Public Safety Management, and is a Certified Safety Professional.
Prior to working for Lewis, Stephen was employed at the Sunoco Philadelphia Refinery as an Emergency Response Supervisor. Additionally, he serves the community with the West Chester Fire Department, Good Fellowship Ambulance Club and is currently the Captain of the Chester County Hazardous Materials Team. Stephen has held the positions of Lieutenant, Captain and Assistant Fire Chief during his 23 years in the fire service.
Additionally, Stephen is PA State Fire Academy Instructor, PEC Instructor and an adjunct professor at West Chester University. His instruction focuses on safety and hazardous materials response.
Treasurer Candidate: Joe Dutko
Joe Dutko has worked for Modern Group Limited for more than 25 years. Modern is a diverse material handling company with 24 locations covering NJ, Eastern PA, DE & MD. In 1991, Joe took the assignment of becoming Modern’s first Safety Director and implemented a broad spectrum of programs to insure the company’s compliance with existing rules and employee safety. Having studied at Penn State and at the National Safety Council, he received his Advance Safety Certificate in 1994. In 1997 he expanded his technical specialties in D.O.T. compliance, combining all 4 Modern
operating companies’ programs into one. Joe has been a member of ASSE since 1998. He has been an active member in the ASSE in attending seminars in Baltimore, Orlando, Atlantic City and other events. He became active in the Philadelphia Chapter in 1999 and joined the Executive Board in 2001.
Joe resides in Burlington City, NJ and is kept busy restoring an 1880 period 3-story brick house. His son Matthew, an accomplished house finish carpenter, is glad to help with some of the more difficult work. Major outdoor activities include; whitewater rafting (the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon was the best so far), exploring the canyons of the West and traveling to name a few.
Delegate Candidates: Hoyt Emmons, Rich Horan and Andrew Salvadore
Hoyt Emmons has been a Philadelphia Chapter member for over 15 years and has serves as Chapter President, Delegate, and currently holds the position of Membership Chair. Hoyt has over 30 years of experience as an EHS professional, and currently works as a senior consultant and trainer with Med-Tex Services, Inc. Hoyt’s professional experiences include being the senior EHS Officer at several companies ranging from start-up operations to billion-dollar multi-national corporations. Hoyt has been successful in developing and implementing EHS programs by bringing together and addressing the needs of key stakeholders including: the organization, the workforce, and the core values of sustainable safety.
Hoyt’s education includes a BS in Animal Husbandry, a MBA in Management, and a MS in Environmental (Occupation) Health.
When he’s not helping people with safety, Hoyt enjoys spending time with family and friends, experiencing nature, and shearing over 2000 sheep each year as a professional sheep shearer.
Rich Horan is a Safety Director for Henkels & McCoy, a leading utility construction firm providing critical infrastructure for the power, oil & gas pipeline, gas distribution, and communications markets throughout North America. With 21 years’ experience as a safety professional, Rich worked effectively with various employers to control losses, and prevent injuries, illnesses, and vehicle accidents.
Rich began his career at PECO Energy, where he worked for 32 years in a variety of roles. Rich also worked for Aramark, a Professional Services Company based in Philadelphia, supporting the Healthcare Line of Business for Safety and Risk Control. Rich holds a M.S. in Safety Sciences from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in Organizational Dynamics from Immaculata University.
Andrew Salvadore is Vice President of Health, Safety, and Environmental of Henkels & McCoy Group, where he provides strategic leadership in safety performance for all employees throughout North America.
Andrew has more than 30 years of experience as a Certified Safety Professional, with expertise in risk management, loss prevention/reduction, behavioral safety management, corporate governance, and compliance programs. Prior to joining Henkels & McCoy, Mr. Salvadore held positions at the Asplundh Tree Expert Company, Martin Marietta Aerospace, and EBASCO Constructors, Inc. Other notable accomplishments include numerous certifications from the Insurance Institute of America, OSHA, and the National Safety Council, among others.
Andrew is a member of the Electrical Transmission and Distribution OSHA Partnership, the Edison Electrical Institute, the American Society of Safety Engineers, and the Penn Del Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science in Safety Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
